Pros of Airport Security post-9/11
As some people argue that Airport Security has made traveling an endeavour, others argue that it has actually made the nation safer. With the implementation of laws like IRTPA (Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act), the probability that terrorist have to enter the country through airports with explosives nowadays has decreased. But there are still some people that do not give up and still believe that they can trespass Airport Security.

For example:
1) Richard Reid, most commonly known as the "shoe bomber", tried to blow up a plane that was going from Paris to Miami. He tried to hid the explosives in his shoes but when one of the flight attendance noticed that it smelled like smoke, he was subdued and sent to prison. He is currently serving his 110 years sentence. (Carafano n.pag)² |
2) José Padilla, trained by the Al-Qaeda, was arrested at the Chicago O'Hare airport by U.S. Customs agents. He was planning, along with Al.Qaeda, to build a radiological bomb attack. Presently, he is serving his 17 years and four months sentence. (Carafano n.pag)² |
3) Defreitas, Kadir, Ibrahim and Nur were responsible for the terrorist plot that would "cause a greater damage than 9/11." This plan was foiled by an enforcement official who busted the conspiracy and arrested the four of them. Kadir, Ibrahim and Defreitas were sentenced to life prision while Nur was convicted to 15 years. (Carafano n.pag)² |
After 9/11, the U.S. government took control over Airport Security and placed it under the command of the Department of Homeland Security. This helped improve the nation's security from terrorism since it was no longer a business controlled by private companies but rather a government funded organization with no interest in earning a profit. Therefore, as some may argue that Airport Security has not at all to improve the nation's security, others argue that it has actually encouraged the United States to make security a more serious issue. Furthermore, the amount of foiled terrorist plots that have been discovered by the Department of Homeland Security proves that the strict procedures that one must follow at the airport, have been effective.
